1 Day tour: Forbidden city, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace

Once again Peter and I (Leslie Swiger) were picked up at the Beijing Crown Plaza. We again had private car, driver and tour guide, the same as for The Great Wall and the Ming Tombs. Can not tell you what great people they were.Known as the Palace Museum, this magnificent complex is a grand monument to the 24 emperors who ruled from its hall over a period of almost 500 years. A must see! The Temple of Heaven is where the emperor would make sacrifices and pray to heaven and his ancestors at the wintger solstice. As the Son of Heaven, the emperor could intercede with the gods on behalf of his people and pray for a good harvest. You can spend hours just hearing about the history of the Temple of Heaven. You may want and make it a day at the Summer Palace. A sprawling landscaped park on the edge of the city, the Summer Palace was a seasonal imperial retreat from the stifing confines of the Forbidden City. It was the favored haunt of the fiercesome Empress Cixi, who had it rebuilt twice; once following its destruction by French and English troops in 1860 and again in 1902, after it was plundered during the Boxer Rebellion. Besure and take the dragon boat across the lake. SoooooooBEAUTIFUL! We are going back and will be using ChinaTour.Net again. Thanks to all those who helped make our trip so enjoyable. Leslie Swiger
