I am a single elderly seasoned female traveller. I found the Shatan Hotel to be just what I wanted: clean, conveniently located with all necessary conveniences for me (safe deposit box in room, tea/coffee, tv, airport shuttle) and is very good value. The staff were friendly and could speak English. It is situated in a little road where one can observe and experience authentic Chinese life. I did not eat in the hotel. There are several eating places where I ate at night. Just around the corner is a bank. I felt safe at all times and ate out alone in the street at night.

I found the hotel to be very good value and location. Whilst the room was on the small side, it was very clean with a queen size bed. I'm sure the food in the hotel may be quite good, but I perferred to eat at some of the eating houses in the surrouding streets, which was very interesting. I must also compliment the girls at the front reception. They were most helpful, and their English was really quite good. I would stay at the Shatan again if I were to ever return to Beijing. Although it is a small hotel, it is traditionally beautifull. It is also on a good location that is easy to reach Jing Shan Park (East gate) but rather far from Wang Fu Jing Shopping area. I also noted that my room was never vacuumed because I found a piece of glass fraction on the floor. However, I would recommend this hotel because it is valued for your money.
