Review of Grand Mercure Xidan Beijing (The Marco Polo Hotel) by CHRISTIAAN

Grand Mercure Xidan Beijing (The Marco Polo Hotel)

Good Hotel with very friendly staff but need refreshment. Hotel starts to show its age and certainly bathrooms need to be renewed. Chinese guests don't respect the non-smoking regulation in the Hotel and are not spoken to by the Hotel staff even when they start smoking at the reception desk where the non-smoking signs are clearly visible. The only staff who acted correctly and straightforward was the girl at the bar in the main entrance hall. She took immediately the cigarette away from a Chinese business man who has started to smoke in the bar. As a consequence you have to check your hotel room before you accept it. Although the Hotel claims to have non-smoking rooms the risk that you will receive a room with the smell of cigarettes is 60%. And accept the smell of cigarettes in the corridors of the Hotelrooms. Hotel makes an effort to create a nice and welcoming atmosphere with live musicians and chinese performance in the main entry hall. The two restaurants in the Hotel, one All day dining V9 and one Chinese are okay and present good and excellent food. The presence of young trainees form European origin who work for the Mercure Hotel Chain are a welcome support and assurance for a foreigner in an environment where the staff hardly speaks English.
