Church of St Sophia

Harbin has many orthodox churches, the majority of which were ransacked during the Cultural Revolution and have since fallen into disrepair.
The restored Church of St Sophia was built by the Russians in 1907 in the heart of the city centre.

The interior of the church has also been restored but left in its original state as much as possible. The result is subtle and beautiful. The church now houses the Harbin Architecture Arts Centre, which displays a black-and-white photographic trail of Harbin’s history pre-liberation.
