We stayed there in 2011. The historic interest was there. It was very convenient to the Bund. The area was not so great - too near the alleys with nefarious services. The hotel amenities were modernized, good enough to be 4 star at that time. Today, Shanghai is the top city of the world, if the Astor House has not upgraded it can no longer compete! With its history it can be a wonderful boutique hotel. The service was quite good. Nice breakfast. The air conditioning needs to be upgraded so that it may be adjustable by room...

We had booked a superior room and when we were checking in, we were told that we were being upgraded to a superior room at no extra cost. They tried to tell us that we had booked only a standard room even though we had our booking confirmation in black and white. The room we got on the 5th floor had a nice view of the river. The room by itself was very large and cozy with a huge bathroom. The hotel staff was very helpful and nice. The heating worked well. The hotel has a nice history, and is very conveniently located. We will definitely stay here on our next trip. - Dianne and Gerard D'Souza..

We were there for a romantic city trip and would definitely recommend this hotel. The entrance hall, the corridors and many rooms are both impressive and cosy. Our room was HUGE, nicely old-fashioned (old wooden floor), had good 3-stars facilities (fridge, boiler, safe, inexpensive internet access) and a very nice view. A few caveats nonetheless: - The quality / size / views vary enormously from one room to another. Check the room and, if not really satisfied, ask for something better. The first room we were given was next to a terribly noisy lift, so beware! - Hotel staff don't speak very well English (as in most places - but how well do you speak Chinese? ;-) but they are very nice - insist a bit and do your best to be understood and you will see that service is excellent! Enjoy your stay in Shanghai as much as we did ;-) Julia Peshkova and Guillaume Durand..

The hotel is very nice, the lobby and the rooms and nicely decorated, keeping the old-style character of the place. Breakfast was quite good, well assorted, and tasty. On the negative side, the personnel at the reception was not too smart, and sometimes just listened english with a dull expression in their face. Interesting enough was the fact that even the baggage boy and the housekeeping attendants could speak some english. The big inconvenience was that my room's lock was not new, so they left the door of my room open for a whole day. Lucky enough nobody got inside my room and took my things away. Moreover my room and my friend's room had water dripping from the ceiling and pieces of paint fell down on the floor and left there. Nobody at the reception thought of changing the room or upgrading it. Nice and clean the bathroom, only two small cockroaches. (Don't be freightened, I've been living in china for 5 years and the presence of this nice little fellows is common everywhere, even in 5 star hotels). All in all, a positive experience, with its little dosis of adventure...

I was very happy to return to the Pujiang Hotel 17 years after I used one of their dorm rooms with a friend in 1989. The renovation is outstanding, the "celebrity room" is amazingly spacious and beautifully equipped, and the place is really full of charm, and the location is fantastic, at walking distance from the Bund and Nanjing Road, a few meters away from the beautiful Garden Bridge. On the negative side, the room was rather noisy due to the night-club downstairs, the breakfast is good but you have to beg for every single thing, from the plates to the yoghurt, and it is quite hard to get a taxi in front of the lobby in spite of uncoordinated but intense efforts of the concierge. Calling a taxi through one of the numerous available phone numbers did not seem to be an option for the reception staff... The manager of the souvenir shop was glad to do it for us after we bought a dress for our daughter. Anyway, the staff is very friendly, so we were inclined to pardon. Overall, fairly good value for money...

I thought the hotel was a great surprise. The rooms were large and the history of the hotel very interesting. I also thought it was in a good position to the Bund. Would recommend it to people on a budget and wanting a very good Three Star hotel...

Old hotel, that they are slowly renovating. Location is northeast of the main People\'s Square area. I booked a standard room. The wing had a terrible chemical fume odor, that permeated my clothes and irritated by throat. The hotel room was incredibly large, but very old, with old plumbing. I arrived at 1 AM. I slept 4 hours, and then checked out because the chemical fume was terrible. I was originally supposed to stay 3 nights. Don\'t stay here. Not healthy...
