There were three of us travelling together so we booked a suite with an extra bed for us. When checking in I asked what room type we were given and was told it was a suite. We were greatly disappointed when we came to the room of this 4-star hotel (that is what they call it), the room was just big enough for the bed, extra bed and couch. I knew from the brouchure that the hotel only had 3 suites and two deluxe suites, yet according to the fire plan our room was exactly the sime size as eight others on the same floor. At the reception the still claimed we had a suite but I explained that I wanted a bigger room (which was hard, withtheir limited english), which we eventually got. I'm still not sure though it it really was a suite we got. The last evening a chinese friend of ours came in and got us a smaller room at a lower cost, because the "suite" was certanly not worth paying extra for. The city-view bar was non-existent. The three rooms we were in all had dirty carpets, you did not want to walk bare-foot on them. Slippers were provided though. Only good thing about this hotel is the location, it is in a cosy neighbourhood within walking distance of the tourist spots. I would however, NOT recommend that you stay at this hotel.

1 out of 5 is exceptionally generous and is only justified by its location. Aside from that, the rooms were filthy, so much so we showered with flip flops on! We asked to see other rooms but quickly discovered that many were the same and after finally changing realised that the worst are reserved for those people booking the cheap rates through the Internet. Service was pleasant if you avoid the male Assistant Manager who is ever-present during the day and who is not only rude but blatantly takes advantage of the vulnerable position you're in having no Chinese to fall back on and essentially rips you off. The fact that it was across the road from the Forbidden City and that we met lovely locals working there are the only redeeming features. Our recommendation, unless you are really a glutton for punishment as we clearly were, the Hedeman Hotel listed in the lonely planet, that a fellow tourist said was both clean and conveniently located next to the subway, should be seriously considered.

Good: The Beijing Red Wall hotel was in a perfect location and we really enjoyed walking around the local hutongs that were just behind the hotel. It had a real "neighbourhood" feeling. The short walk along the canal towards the Forbidden City and Behai Park was very nice. Bad: The carpets in the room and throughout the hotel were filthy. So much that if you wore your socks in the room, within minutes they were black and smelly. The beds were also very hard, but one member of our group liked that. The rest had to fold the blankets so you could lie on them instead. We booked a van through the hotel that was to take us to the airport. The van finally came, but it was very late. The hotel offered a buffet breakfast, but the dishes were not replenished very often, so there was not a big choice of food. Also, the tablecloths were very dirty, as well as the carpet.

We stayed at the Beijing Red wall for 3 night. The service was OK, the rooms were TINY and dirty carpets, nothing really to write home about. It is steps away from the corner of the Forbidden City compound. Although they do not have the View Bar that they had advertised, adn which was our main reason for choosing that hotel. When i asked, the reception said that they were thinking of building it. There is more of a language barrier here, than i felt at other places as well, and the internet adn travel services at the hotel desk downstairs were at rip off prices. In all an OK experience I would not stay here again
