Review of Shanghai Midtown Hotel Service Apartment by Eu-Meng

Shanghai Midtown Hotel Service Apartment

We stayed in a two-bedroom apartment, which was kept clean daily though I doubt the bedlinens were changed daily. While it is a relatively quiet place, it was rather noisy outside the building. We stayed in two different apartments on two separate occasions. The first faced the main road and it does get rather noisy with traffice noise, especially the tooting of vehicle horns after 6 am. The second apartment faced a multi-storey carpark, which was quiter but unfortunately, there were some renovation works going on. Exactly at 7 am, the pneumatic drills will start - even on Sundays! How hardworking they are but poor us, we couldn't sleep. The hot water boiler had the habit of turning itself off regularly. So, while showering it was not unusual to have to shout for someone to turn it on again or suffer a very cold shower. The boiler sits in the kitchen. There is no gym at this hotel although on its website it says it has one. Other than four glasses and two tea cups, there are no other utensils such as plates, knives, spoons, kettle or chopsticks, which one expects to find in a service apartment. The staff were generally helpful and they do smile. Service is quite prompt. The free afternoon coffee (from a coffee making machine) served in the atrium was good. Breakfast is of reasonable standard, that is, if you like eating Chinese breakfast items. Breakfast coupons are issued per room, not by the number of people registered to stay in the apartment. So if you need more coupons you have to pay 10 RMB each. But that's like USD1.25. Getting back to the hotel was always a problem as you have to give very clear instructions to the taxi drivers. You need to specify that it is at the east side of Chong Qing Nan Lu (South Chong Qing Road), at the cross roads with Shijiahui Lu. Showing the drivers the hotel card with the map drawn on it was seldom of any use. But for the price we paid, plus the big spacious space and large beds with firm mattresses, one can't complain too much.
