Everything worked perfectly. In my case I used the train in Beijing/Qingdao and also in Shanghai where the process of just showing the passport and going straight through to the train was easy. I went with no smartphone and only paid with cash. That was easy too but it is important to have the train number/coach and seat number written down! Finding cash ticket offices on the metro is not so simple since the automatic machines only work with the Chinese ID card.
