I booked a ticket going from Guangzhou to Hung Hom (HK). Booking the ticket online was easy enough, but if you need to change the time or cancel, it is impossible to do online. You must go to the station, well actually to the agent who sits at one of the tables inside KFC. That location from where I live is around a 4 hour journey. Not so convenient. They did however respond to my emails quickly, but weren't very helpful in providing actual solutions. I ended up having to change the time of my first train, which is another story entirely! Anyway I made it to KFC in time to collect my ticket to find that the price I paid and what I could have easily bought the ticket for at the station, were quite different, there was about an ¥80 markup. Perhaps this is just for this particular ticket, but if I was doing this trip to HK again, I would just wait and buy a ticket when I get to the station.
