Located in Huairou District about 45 miles from Beijing, the Mutianyu Great Wall enjoys a long history and is part of the historic culture of China. It connects to the Jiankou (箭扣) Section in the West and the Qilianguan (亓连关) Ruins in the East. The wall was first built during the Northern Qi Dynasty (550 – 557). During Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644), Tan Lun and Qi Jiguang, two famous patriotic generals, rebuilt it in order to strengthen its defensive potential as they regarded it as a strategic block for national defense. It served as the Northern area’s protective block, guarding the capital and imperial mausoleums for generations.

Mutianyu Great Wall, whose surrounding greening level is surpassing Badaling Great Wall, ranking first among all the Great Wall sections, is one of the famous scenic spots of the Great Wall. In the summer, the Mutianyu Great Wall is like a gray dragon lying in the green sea.
It will take around one hour to drive to the Mutianyu Great Wall from the North Fourth Ring Road or the Capital Airport in Beijing, certainly,with the premise that there is no traffic jam. Compared with Badaling Great Wall, Mutianyu is of a longer history and a relatively less commercial atmosphere, which was regarded as the most popular Great Wall destination for foreigners to visit China.
Mutianyu Great Wall offers visitors a variety of ways to travel. You can choose the trails, cable cars and cableways to reach the destination, and in addition to these, you can also choose the toboggan when you are ready to get down. Nevertheless, centainly, you can't fly up. Because the helicopter can only hover over the Great Wall so that you can take a bird view of the Great Wall, but it can not land on the Great Wall.
Chinese ancients are fond of jade deeply, which have always enjoyed a high reputation in China as a valuable luxury. It is a good choice to pick a piece of jade as a gift for the family while visiting the Great Wall.
The interior scenic area of Mutianyu Great Wall is completely repaired make it a relatively convenient spot for hiking and thus very friendly to ordinary tourists. In addition, if you are an avid wild hiking enthusiast, Mutianyu Great Wall is also connected with the Arrow Button——the most dangerous part of unrepaired Great Wall in Beijing, where you will experience the fabulous experience of hiking. Although the Arrow Button is dangerous, the scenery is definitely worth a visit. The landscape of the Zhengbei Tower will tell you what is really steep and spectacular.

On the Great Wall, instead of just viewing the scenery, the proper amount of climbing can make you get to know the great dedication and contribution of the builders in ancient times.
After taking account of the factors of weather and crowds, we still believe that the May Day , National Day (first week of Oct.) and Spring Festival holidays are not the best time to travel.
The rainy day is very suitable for climbing the Great Wall.
The sunny days of the summer and autumn (May-September) are suitable for taking photos. Besides take measures for sun protection, you should also pay attention to avoid exposure to the sun at noon (12:00-14:30) in June, July and August.
The shuttle bus and the uphill tool are well worth it: if you are not traveling to the Great Wall for the purpose of tempering physical fitness, we strongly recommend taking a shuttle bus and a mountain climbing tool (cable car or cableway), which will save you valuable physical strength as you climb the Great Wall. Because climbing the mountain is absolutely not an easy journey.
Toboggan

If you plan to climb the Great Wall in the summer, we recommend that you climb the Great Wall after 2:30 in the afternoon so that you can stay there until dusk. After that, you can take the trail down the mountain. If you intend to take the cable car or the Toboggan down the mountain, please confirm the stop time of the cable car, or toboggan.
In the harsh winter, it is not recommended to visit the Great Wall. If you want to come, please choose a warmer weather, because the lowest temperature on the top of mountain in the winter (January) can reach -20 degrees Celsius.
If you have already reached the ticket gate but have not yet got a ticket, don't worry, please buy tickets at the fare adjustment window.
Comfortable round way: Take the cable car to the No. 14 watchtower, where you can look out over the words “Loyal to Chairman Mao” in distance, then go back to the No. 6 watchtower and take the chair lift down the hill.
Moderate round way: Take the cableway to the 6th watchtower, then descend to the 1st watchtower, then turn back to the 14th watchtower and take the cable car to get down.
Comprehensive way : Take the cable car to the No. 14 watchtower, then head north for the No. 23 watchtower, where you can overlook the panoramic view of Mutianyu, turn back all the way down to the 1st, then return to the 6th watchtower for a toboggan or chair lift.
Sunny Summer Climbing way: Take the cable car to the No. 14 watchtower at 3 pm. Head north to the No. 23 watchtower, where you can overlook the panoramic view of Mutianyu, turn back all the way down to the 10th or 6th watchtower, walk down the Great Wall.
Sunny Summer Relaxing way: Take the cable car to reach the No. 14 watchtower at 3 pm, head south to the No. 1 , and return to the No. 6 watchtower to walk down the Great Wall.
Southern Ticket Gate
After entering the Southern ticket gate, you can choose to take the chairlift (right) or walk up (left) to the Great Wall (Tower No.6).
